i just picked up some new to me rims that need to be cleaned up. i figured the easiest way would be to sand blast them. anybody know of a place that will do it cheap or an other way to get the rust off these things without toooo much effort. either in RI or MA near Attelboro. i called up one place and they quoted me $85 and hour. is that reasonable?

you can probably buy new rims for the cost @ 85 an hour, I think Shelton has one or access to one.

nah, i was looking. $250 for 5. i bought these for $50. i guess Home Depot sells the gun and i have a compressor at work i might be able to use for a bit. a guy i was talking to mentioned playground sand can be used so for 20 bucks i might go that route i just didn't want to have to be picking sand out of every crack

Will the rims be used off-road? If so you can use a twisted wire wheel with a drill, rust converter, paint, and your good to go.

If you do end up sandblasting them figure the cost of a resperator and safty goggles. Also I have used the out door type blasters you will want to get a piece of window screen to filter all the biger piece of sand/rocks so you don't jam the nozzle

ya, just off-road. i was thinking about wire wheeling them but after looking at them yesterday, it just looked like more work than i wanted to do. the backside of the rims are pretty bad. plus in addition to this i have a couple axles i need to rip apart and this heat does nothing for motivation.

I have have used Prep-Rite in Tewksbury. They can do anything to a full dump truck to wheels. But for the price of sandblasting you can get a new set of steel wheels.

Time is money. I would not think twice about paying somebody to sandblast them and I wager that after about 15 minutes of dicking around with a wire wheel or grinder you will feel the same way.
And those cheesy suction type sandblasters are USELESS. You'd be better off with a wire wheel.

and some people take pride in doing it themselves regardless of the task.
