if a 2:73 carrier will work I can give one to you Bob.  I am sure I can break away to come deliver it  or meet you 1/2 way at least.  I am only in Sturbridge...a few towns from home. Maybe 15 min.  I believe it will work and carry gears to 3:54's .

lmk as it would be no trouble at all and I owe ya one.  I could also help you install it right at gunstock Friday.  Not sure when your headed up but I will be there by 2ish I believe.  Up 2 U

my research tells me the cutoff is 3:73 and up is the 4" carrier and your 3:31 gears should fit fine on a 2:73 carrier but I jst did a quick google search. Call my cell if ya want it Bob.  Posi will let us know in the am Wink  Cheesy

Don't feel too bad Bob sunday wasn't too much better. I snapped the tracbar mount off the axle and yamagrizzly smashed his oil pan. Called it quits early. Got some new motivation to get the new front axle done though.

Rule of thumb is whenever you change out the carrier or ring and pinion you set the gears. However, I’m assuming your rig is mostly off road so I would through some paint on it to check chances are you'll be fine. Changing out the bearings would be the only time you wouldn’t need to set the gears.

I am not going to bring it to Gunstock. I still need to get off the trailer too, and unload my camper so I can use the truck. I will take it.

hope this helps with installing new carrier. I have now given up on writing any more in this reply because I have already written about 10 pages worth and have lost it trying to upload the dam picture. multiple times. so here. any questions ask. This is my little way of cheating while swapping carriers. If you really care you can re-check it, but I never did with my orange yj.

juist make the ring side the same then add shims to the other side untill you can barely fit it in the houseing then add one more and press it in nicceeee and tight.

Bob, Rich's carrier will work, as mentioned. Glad the gears were not ruined, your issue was definately baffling.

If I was you, I would do an exact swap, gears, bearings, shims and all, then I would check your pattern, there will be a real good chance that your will be alright. I think currie's sight has a great write up about how to read a gear pattern. this will give you a great base line. if your carrier with bearings are snug in the diff it will only be a matter of switching shims from one side to the other if needed.
