Dear Mr. Shannon:

Thank you for contacting me regarding America's Red Rock Wilderness Act of 2009. It was good to hear from you.

Representative Maurice Hinchey again introduced America's Red Rock Wilderness Act of 2009, H.R. 1919, on April 2, 2009, which would protect many wilderness-quality areas in Utah. I am, once again, an original cosponsor of H.R. 1919 and this bill currently has 157 cosponsors in the House.

America's Red Rock Wilderness Act would allow 9.5 million acres of unspoiled open space in Utah to be protected as part of America's National Wilderness Preservation System. These lands face a number of threats from development, road building and off-road vehicles that could forever scar and destroy their pristine nature. Currently, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) owns and operates this land, but it is not prohibited from allowing these damaging actions to occur. Designating these areas as wilderness would ensure that they will be preserved and protected in their natural state.

H.R. 1919 was referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources and subsequently the Subcommittee on Forests and Forest Health. Now more than ever Representative Hinchey's bill is needed to protect these lands, and as a Member of the Natural Resources Committee I will continue to monitor this important piece of legislation as it makes its way through the legislative process.

Thank you for taking the time to share your views with me. Please feel free to contact me with any other questions or comments you may have. Please visit my website at http://markey.house.gov to see other issues that I am working on or sign up for my E-Newsletter for updates.

Sincerely,

Ed Markey
