Thanks for the kind words.

I hope I don’t disappoint you guys, but I don’t believe this build to be anything special compared to others on this forum.

a build is a build, everyone here is interested, and you never know, could always learn something new from a new build.
I sure as heck am interested.

Hey Chuck, I regard this as a build.  And knowing you, it will be a very high quality build.  I look forward to seeing more pictures, and eventually seeing it in the woods with us!

Cheers

Thanks everyone, I appreciate it!

Kewl! Did the Suburban go to a grave?

Not yet.

I had a few guys call me before I even listed the parts on CL. I’m thinking someone called or PM’d you asking who bought it. Some guy name Denis from NEOW called wanting the side and rear windows along with the rear side doors.

Everything went down yesterday. Cam (a new member here) and his father came over early yesterday morning and we pulled the engine. They also took the radiator and tires. Meanwhile Brian a friend of Denis called wanting the tranny and t-case.

When Cam and his farther left Brian came over and ended up buying the whole truck (turns out I already met Brian last summer). Man, that truck is getting dragged around from town to town. I feel better every part is being used and it’s not in the scrap yard, at least not yet. I’m also glad I didn’t put it there.

I know what that truck meant to you so I’m happy a piece of it will continue in my project.

Thanks,

The CJ came with a 360/T-15O/D-20. The 360 with stay and I will add a CJ T-18/D20

I went with the GM TBI for a couple reasons, I didn’t want to spend the $1300 or more for an after market FI unit and my thinking was that by pulling and installing it would give me a better understanding on how the system works with all it’s sensors.

Although I didn’t need too I pulled the complete harness I did (except for tail lights) I also pulled the sensors, bulk head, grommets, and replays.

spiffy, i didnt think you were the full size chevy rock crawler crowd.  now get this bad boy on the trail.

For the rear axle I will be using a CJ WT (wide track) D-44 I removed from a parts Jeep I bought awhile ago.  The donor CJ had a 4 cylinder 4 speed with 3.54 gears. As you can see not all CJs with a 4 cyl came with 4.10s. The gear ratio was dictated by the tranny behind the 4 cyl. If it had a 4 speed it would come stock with 3.54, if it had a 5 speed it would have 4.10s.

The tear down

I subbed out to a friend the install of 4.10s and a full Detroit.

Over the weekend I wire wheeled the axle, chased all the threads and welded the tubes. I then laid a couple coats of Rusty Metal Primer. I also built a simple axle cradle with 2x4s and I notched out the ends to keep the axle stationary.

Wire brushed, primed and used a high heat top coat.

I went with a gloss top coat with the thoughts of mud not sticking to it as much. Not sure if it will hold true but I used it anyways.

I'm always curious to know, what process did you use when you welded the tubes?

I believe that the gloss or semi gloss sluffs off mud easier than a flat color.  Good choice!
